Prime Minister of Luxembourg addresses 76th UNGA session

New York, 25 September 2021(TDI): The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, addressed the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He praised the medical staff all over the world who battled the pandemic. He credited the physical meeting of the General Assembly to the doctors and paramedics all around the world. He emphasized that there is no going back to pre-pandemic days anytime soon. He regretted the educational, economic, and human costs of the pandemic.

He stated that the world can no longer function like it did in the pre-pandemic days. He called on the leaders of the world to cooperate multilaterally, with United Nations as the center of coordination. He congratulated Abdullah Shahid upon his election as the new UNGA president.

He expressed his regret over the situation in Afghanistan. He stated that the takeover by the Taliban is undoing the progress of the last twenty years. He expressed his concern for human rights in Afghanistan. He also expressed his sorrow and regret the future of women in Afghanistan.

Bettel also called the leaders of the world to pay attention to climate change. He stated that Luxembourg has experienced floods of unmatched intensities this year due to climate change.

He reiterated that Luxembourg is committed to democracy, human rights, and development. He emphasized the importance of the private sector and civil society in the development of any country.
