Islamabad, 8 August 2022 (TDI): The President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, congratulated the Pakistani Olympic athlete Arshad Nadeem on winning a gold medal in the javelin throw at the commonwealth games.

Arshad Nadeem made history in the javelin throw with his record distance of 90.18 meters at the commonwealth games at Birmingham. He is also the first Pakistani to claim an athletic gold medal in 60 years.

He won by achieving that distance in his fifth throw. His competitors included world champion Anderson Peters, former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, and former Commonwealth and world champion Julius Yego.
Nadeem also outthrew Neeraj Chopra of India’s throws at the World Athletics Championship (88.13m) and the Tokyo Olympics (87.58m, Gold).
This is the second gold for Pakistan in Commonwealth Games 2022. Earlier, weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt won the gold medal for Pakistan in the CWG with a record lift of 405kg.

Arshad Nadeem had also been suffering from his elbow injury that occurred in Tokyo Olympics last year. He had a soft tissue trauma in his knee but still managed to bag a gold medal by the end of the day.
Other Pakistani Athletes in the CWG22
Pakistan has sent a total of 68 athletes to the CWG to compete in 12 different sports. The country has earned eight medals at the commonwealth games till now. These include two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.
Nooh Dastagir Butt and Arshad Nadeem have scored the gold medals in +109kg weightlifting and javelin throw, respectively. Wrestlers Zaman Anwar, Muhammad Inam, and Muhammad Sharif Tahir won silver medals.
Shah Hussain Shah won Pakistan its first medal in the 90 kg event. It was followed by Inayatullah in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling event and Ali Asad in the 57 kg wrestling event.
