# PM Carney Strengthens Canada-Europe Strategic Alliances

**Ottawa (TDI): **In his maiden overseas trip as Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney has embarked on a strategic mission to fortify alliances with key European partners in response to escalating trade tensions with the United States.

Prime Minister Carney met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday. Both underscored their commitment to fair trade practices and the importance of international cooperation.

President Macron praised Canada’s collaborative approach on the global stage, emphasizing that tariffs are counterproductive, leading to inflation and supply chain disruptions.

Carney’s decision to visit Paris instead of Washington, as is usual for Canadian leaders, which comes after US President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions with both Canada and Europe, and floated threats of annexing Canada.

These meetings aim to explore new economic and security partnerships, reinforcing the longstanding ties between Canada and the UK.

Moreover, during the call with the President of European Union Commission Ursula von der Leyen, both spoke about the ReArm Europe Plan and Canada’s role in strengthening defence at home and abroad.

Mark Carney said that in the current scenario of global threats, Canada is meeting this moment — securing new military equipment and working with allies to maintain peace in the region and to establish mutual collaboration with all states.
