Houston, 14 April 2022 (TDI): The Pakistani Consular General in Houston, Abrar H Hashmi, attended a meeting of the Houston Consular Corps.
The annual meeting was held at the Consulate General of Indonesia in Houston. The officials discussed Terms of References, accounts, and plans for the next year.
Furthermore, the Pakistani Consul expressed gratitude to the Indonesian Consul General Andre Omer Siregar for hosting the occasion. He also thanked Dean Rodolfo and his Teams.
Pakistanis in Houston
Pakistan maintains a presence in Houston, Texas, through its Consulate General. A large number of Pakistani-origin US citizens live in the city. Moreover, many Pakistanis come here for work, study, and business. Houston is the fourth-largest city in the US by population.
People of Pakistani origin in the city number around 60,000 to 80,000 people. More than 10% of all Pakistani diaspora in the United States live in the city and its suburbs. A majority of the Muslim population in the city is of Pakistani origin.
Pakistanis form a relatively prosperous community. Pakistanis in Houston include owners of small and large businesses, computer engineers, and medical professionals. Smaller businesses include convenience stores, gas stations, and restaurants. Furthermore, Pakistanis also own some large businesses related to information technology, manufacturing, real estate, and textiles in the city.
Non-governmental associations serving the Pakistani community also exist. For instance, the Pakistan Association of Greater Houston and the Pakistani American Community Center serve the cohesion of the community.
Pakistan-US Relations
The US and Pakistan’s political relationship has been marked by periods of coldness and cordiality. However, the two countries’ social, cultural, educational, and economic relations have seen continuous growth.
Pakistan and US trade equals about $6.6 billion as of 2019. Meanwhile, the US exported $2.6 billion worth of goods to Pakistan. While imports from Pakistan totaled $3.9 billion. The U.S. goods trade deficit with Pakistan was $1.3 billion in 2019. Both countries continue to enhance trade ties.
