# Pakistan Urges UN to Restore Normal Traffic in Strait of Hormuz

**United Nations (TDI):** Pakistan has urged the United Nations to ensure the swift restoration of normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that ongoing disruptions are affecting global trade, energy supplies, and vulnerable populations.

Speaking during a UN General Assembly veto debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, called for the protection of civilian vessels and crew, and emphasized the need for safe and uninterrupted passage through the strategic waterway.

He expressed concern over recent developments in the Middle East, saying the conflict should have been avoided due to its wide-ranging consequences.

The envoy said Pakistan has consistently supported de-escalation and diplomacy, highlighting that Islamabad hosted talks on April 11–12 as part of efforts to encourage a ceasefire and promote long-term regional stability under what he referred to as the “Islamabad Process.”

He noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are having global repercussions, including in Pakistan, affecting energy imports, fertilizers, food security, and the cost of essential goods. These pressures, he warned, are worsening living conditions for vulnerable populations.

Ambassador Ahmad cautioned that continued escalation would deepen economic hardship and prolong suffering beyond the region, while a return to peace would benefit all countries involved.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty and security of regional states and expressed solidarity with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

The ambassador said Pakistan is actively engaging with multiple stakeholders, including Washington and Tehran, to encourage dialogue and create conditions for meaningful negotiations.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s position, he said Islamabad would continue to play a constructive diplomatic role aimed at promoting understanding, dialogue, and lasting peace in the region.
