# Pakistan, UNSC Members Condemn Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

**United Nations (TDI):** At a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing, several countries, including Pakistan, voiced concern over Israel’s recent decision to recognise Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland, questioning whether the move could facilitate the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza or the establishment of military bases.

Pakistan’s Deputy UN Ambassador, Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon, described Israel’s recognition as “deeply troubling,” citing previous references by Israel to Somaliland as a potential destination for Palestinian deportation.

“Against the backdrop of Israel’s prior statements about using Somaliland as a destination for Palestinian relocation, its unilateral recognition of the region is extremely concerning,” Jadoon said.

Reports earlier this year indicated that the US and Israel had approached officials in Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland to explore possible relocation options for Palestinians from Gaza. Jadoon criticized the move, stating, “For decades, Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land has been a source of instability in the Middle East. Now, it appears to be exporting this destabilizing conduct to the Horn of Africa, with serious implications for regional peace and security.”

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm opposition to any measures aimed at the forced displacement of Palestinians and underlined that international law prohibits any such actions. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for a sovereign, independent Palestinian state within pre-1967 borders, with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital.

Jadoon also reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a direct violation of Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and called on the UNSC to reject any actions undermining Somalia’s unity. “The Somaliland region remains an inseparable part of Somalia. No external actor has the legal or moral authority to change this reality,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, the Arab League’s UN Ambassador, Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz, rejected any actions stemming from Israel’s recognition that could facilitate Palestinian displacement or exploit northern Somali ports for military purposes.

Somalia’s UN Ambassador, Abukar Dahir Osman, said Council members including Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Somalia “unequivocally reject any attempts to relocate Palestinians to northwestern Somalia.”
