Pakistan-South Africa Signed Joint Commission Agreement

Pretoria, 26 November 2021 (TDI): The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of South Africa, on Thursday 25 November 2021, signed an agreement for the establishment of the Pakistan-South Africa Joint Commission.

During a bilateral meeting held in South African capital Pretoria, the agreement was ratified by the Pakistan High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa Mazhar Javed and the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor.

The purpose of this joint agreement was to expand cooperation between these two friendly nations. The Joint Agreement will offer the mechanism for bilateral cooperation in all agreed areas for the betterment of trade and economic relations between Pakistan and South Africa. 

Along with it, this agreement will guarantee an effective mechanism to review, monitor and expand cooperation between these two countries in diverse areas. Both South Africa and Pakistan share cordial relations, and under this agreement, both of these countries want to further strengthen their ties by exploring ways and means for better and enhanced economic cooperation. 

A brief history of Pakistan-South Africa diplomatic relations

The cordial and brotherly relations between the Republic of South Africa and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan dates back to more than six decades. However, the official diplomatic relations between these two countries were established in April 1994 when High Commissioner Ismail Coovadia assumed charge as South Africa’s first High Commissioner to Pakistan. He took up his position in July 1995. In 1993, Pakistan had already established a High Commission in Pretoria. 

Pakistan-South Africa Joint Commission: How did it start?

A joint commission provides a formal platform for enhanced bilateral cooperation between two nation-states. The first Joint Commission between Pakistan and South Africa was organized in Islamabad on the DG level from 11 to 13 March 2007.

Moving forward, in November 2014, the fourth Joint Commission between Pakistan and South Africa was held in Pretoria. It reaffirmed better and smooth bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and South Africa. 

The agreement for Joint Commission always allows both of these states to enhance bilateral cooperation to ensure peaceful relations.
