Islamabad, 2 May 2023 (TDI): Pakistan announced the repatriation of 200 fishermen and three civilian prisoners of India. This announcement was made by the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in a tweet earlier today. The fishermen and prisoners were reportedly detained for violating Pakistan’s border and territorial waters.
It is heartening to note that Pakistan has already released 198 fishermen as of May 12, 2023, who were arrested by Pakistani armed forces on the same charges of violating the international borders of Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bhutto Zardari, said in a tweet, “This repatriation of Indian prisoners is in line with Pakistan’s policy of not politicizing humanitarian matters.” He further added that compassion should take precedence over politics.
The return of prisoners right after the recommendation of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs to restore diplomatic ties with India reflects Pakistan’s seriousness on the matter and can be seen as a positive step towards improving relations between the two countries.

Pakistan has always strived toward a peaceful and more stable region. Pakistan’s participation in the SCO-CFM in Goa, India, last month, while having tensions with the host country, also signals how responsibly Pakistan is approaching its foreign policy.
The country has been actively engaged in promoting regional peace and stability, particularly in Afghanistan, where it has played a key role in facilitating the peace talks between the Taliban and America.
Moreover, Pakistan has also been working closely with China to enhance economic cooperation and connectivity in the region through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
