Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability on International Day of Zero Waste

Islamabad (TDI): On the International Day of Zero Waste, Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving zero waste and ensuring environmental sustainability.

In his message on the Day, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed commitment to build a more sustainable textile industry, reduce waste, and to promote environment friendly policies.

He noted that in view of the environmental challenges posed by the textile industry, Pakistan is taking significant steps to minimize waste and pollution. As a major textile producer, the country is promoting sustainable production practices, encouraging recycling of textiles, and advocating for responsible consumption to reduce the industry’s environmental impact.

“Pakistan is tackling waste pollution through initiatives like Living Indus Initiative to restore Indus River, community waste management and plastic waste management action plan to reduce plastic usage throughout the country,” the Prime Minister’s official statement read.

With global waste production projected to rise from 2.1 billion tons in 2024 to 3.8 billion tons by 2050, International Day of Zero Waste streamlines efforts to manage and reduce waste.

This year’s theme “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles” highlights the environmental impact of fast fashion and textile industries as a major contributor to global waste.

Studies indicate that 92 million tons of textile waste are produced annually, with much of it ending up in landfills or incinerated, exacerbating pollution and resource depletion.

From banning single-use plastics to promoting recycling initiatives, many countries are now actively taking steps to achieve the vision of a waste-free future.

Government of Pakistan also urged government agencies, industries, communities, and individuals to take proactive steps toward sustainable waste management.
