Pakistan Participated in 143rd IPU Conference

Madrid, 29 November 2021: The Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, represented the country at the 143rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference yesterday.

The Conference and its related meetings, hosted by the Spanish Parliament, are being held in Madrid from November 26 to November 30, 2021.

In his remarks, Speaker Qaiser highlighted the significance of the conference regarding the resolution of contemporary challenges that are affecting the entire world.

While addressing the Conference, he called for collective and responsible global actions to combat the existing challenges and to strengthen democratic norms. He further noted that global inclination towards populism threatens the core fundamentals of democracy.

Moreover, Speaker Qaisar shared his views about the importance of the conference for Pakistan as it resonates with many of the state’s contemporary challenges, such as tackling the global pandemic, Covid-19.

He greatly emphasized the global acceptance of democratic culture and norms for the smooth functioning of the political systems worldwide.

All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, and on Middle East Questions, the Forums of Women and Young Parliamentarians, convened the Assembly.

The Conference provides a platform for delegates to exchange their views on various issues. It seeks to galvanize parliamentary action to promote and uphold democracy across the globe.

In addition, IPU adopts resolutions on urgent matters and the subjects taken up by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.

At the 143rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference, the participating states collectively raised their voices against human rights violations, the jeopardy of populism, discrimination against women, and the spread of hate speech in the virtual realm.
