# Pakistan Joins OIC in Rejecting Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

**Islamabad (TDI):** Backed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran, Egypt and Qatar, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, calling it a threat to international peace and security.

The joint statement criticizes Israel’s decision as unprecedented and highlights the potential repercussions for stability in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea region, and beyond. It also emphasized that Israel’s move disregards international law and undermines the sovereignty of established nations.

Israel recently became the first country to formally recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his intention to cooperate with Somaliland in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, technology, and the economy. He congratulated Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, praised his leadership, and invited him to visit Israel. Netanyahu described the recognition as aligned with the spirit of the Abraham Accords, originally initiated under President Trump.

President Abdullahi responded by stating that Somaliland’s participation in the Abraham Accords would support regional and global peace.

However, the joint statement from Muslim nations strongly rejected this recognition. It described Israel’s move as a “grave violation of international law and the UN Charter,” underscoring the principle of protecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also stressed that any action threatening Somalia’s unity or attempting to undermine its territorial sovereignty is unacceptable.

The declaration further warned that recognizing parts of existing states sets a dangerous precedent that could destabilize international peace. It also dismissed any connection between such actions and efforts to displace the Palestinian population, stating that any such attempts are categorically rejected.

Somalia expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its unwavering support. Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali praised Pakistan for standing by Somalia and requested Islamabad’s help in raising the issue at the United Nations Security Council.

In a phone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, he thanked Pakistan for its continued backing. Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemned any attempts to destabilize the nation.
