# Pakistan, Italy Sign Diplomatic Passport Visa Waiver Agreement

**Rome (TDI):** Pakistan and Italy have signed a new agreement eliminating visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, a move aimed at facilitating official exchanges and further strengthening bilateral relations.

The accord was signed in Rome by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy, Ali Javed, and Italy’s Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, during a ceremony held at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prior to the signing, the two diplomats held detailed discussions on bilateral ties and cooperation at international forums, including the United Nations and the European Union. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing momentum in relations and described their partnership as increasingly dynamic and strategic.

Officials said the visa waiver agreement would make diplomatic travel more efficient and help deepen institutional engagement between the two countries. They characterized the accord as a reflection of the trust and friendship underpinning Pakistan-Italy relations and an important addition to the existing framework of cooperation.

Pakistan and Italy currently maintain a broad network of agreements covering sectors such as tourism, culture, science and technology, sports, higher defense studies, and anti-narcotics cooperation. In addition, more than 20 memorandums of understanding are in place between academic institutions and research organizations from both countries.

Among the key pillars of bilateral cooperation are the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in 2009, the Strategic Engagement Plan launched in 2013, and the Joint Economic Commission established in 2005. Other longstanding arrangements include the Investment Protection Treaty of 1997, the Dual Citizenship Agreement of 1983, and the Extradition Treaty signed in 1972.

A major milestone in recent years came in May 2025, when Pakistan and Italy signed a labour mobility and migration agreement in Islamabad. The arrangement, Pakistan’s first such accord with a European country, created a dedicated quota of 10,500 jobs in Italy for Pakistani workers.

During the meeting, Ambassador Javed also renewed Pakistan’s invitation to Ambassador Guariglia, on behalf of the foreign secretary, to visit Islamabad for the seventh round of Bilateral Political Consultations. He conveyed Pakistan’s readiness to host the dialogue in the final quarter of 2026.
