ISLAMABAD, (TDI): The Pakistani government has blocked the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and restricted the use of VPNs to reduce the spread of misinformation.
Parliamentary Secretary, Sajid Mehdi, informed the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Mehdi made these comments while responding to a call-to-attention notice raised by Asiya Naz Tanoli about the growing issue of fake news on social media.
He further stated that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had blocked 86,000 SIM cards involved in anti-state activities. To curb the spread of misinformation, the government has also limited the use of VPNs.

However, Mehdi mentioned that amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are being planned to strengthen regulations against fake news.
A task force has been set up under the Prime Minister’s instructions to address the issue of fake news, and awareness campaigns are being launched at universities, colleges, and schools.
Mehdi noted that Pakistan’s approach to tackling fake news is different from global practices, where misinformation is not prioritized as much, and freedom of expression is more emphasised.
He acknowledged that combating fake news is a difficult challenge worldwide but emphasized that the government remains committed to reducing its impact.
