# Pakistan to Direct Surplus Food Exports to Gulf as Conflict Disrupts Supply Chains

**Islamabad (TDI):** Pakistan’s Prime Minister has directed authorities to develop a plan to export surplus food commodities to Gulf countries amid supply disruptions triggered by the ongoing conflict in Middle East.

The directive came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review Pakistan’s domestic food supply and assess opportunities to support regional markets facing shortages.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the move follows disruptions caused by the United States–Israeli joint strikes on Iran on February 28, and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks on US interests in Gulf states, which have strained supply chains across the region.

Officials briefed the prime minister that Pakistan currently holds significant stocks of food commodities and has strong potential to expand exports of agricultural produce, meat, poultry, dairy products and seafood.

Sharif emphasized that the country should capitalize on this capacity while ensuring domestic food availability is not affected.

“In the current situation, the provision of food commodities required by the Gulf countries and their food security should be taken care of,” Sharif said during the meeting, urging authorities to prepare a comprehensive export strategy.

To oversee the initiative, the prime minister ordered the formation of a committee tasked with monitoring the situation on a daily basis and coordinating efforts among government departments.

Pakistan’s ambassadors and trade officers stationed in Gulf countries have also been instructed to actively engage with host governments and explore immediate export opportunities.

Sharif further directed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to facilitate shipments of food commodities through maritime routes, ensuring smooth and timely delivery to Gulf markets. He stressed that strict quality standards must be maintained to strengthen Pakistan’s reputation as a reliable supplier.

The plan will help Pakistan increase export revenues while strengthening economic and diplomatic ties with Gulf states, many of which rely heavily on imported food supplies.

The initiative also comes at a time when Islamabad is seeking to expand its agricultural exports and boost foreign exchange earnings.
