# Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Explore JF-17 Jets-for-Loans Deal

**Islamabad (TDI): **Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are in talks to convert around $2 billion in Saudi loans into a deal involving JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, a move that could significantly deepen defense cooperation between the two long-standing allies, according to a Reuters report.

The discussions come as Pakistan grapples with acute financial pressure, while Saudi Arabia is recalibrating its regional security partnerships amid uncertainty over long-term US commitments in the Middle East.

If concluded, the arrangement would allow Islamabad to reduce part of its debt burden while boosting exports from its domestic defense industry.

Sources familiar with the matter said the talks are primarily focused on the JF-17 Thunder, a light combat aircraft jointly developed by Pakistan and China and manufactured locally. One source said the total value of the proposed package could reach $4 billion, including an additional $2bn for equipment beyond the loan conversion.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to comment publicly. The negotiations are seen as part of broader efforts to operationalize a mutual defense pact signed by the two countries last year.

The agreement commits both sides to treat any aggression against one as an attack on both, reinforcing their decades-old security partnership.

Saudi Arabia has also continued to support Pakistan financially through loan rollovers and deferred oil supply arrangements to help stabilize its economy.

Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu recently visited Saudi Arabia for bilateral talks, including discussions on military cooperation. The JF-17’s appeal has grown due to its operational track record and affordability.

Retired Air Marshal Amir Masood told Reuters that Pakistan is either in talks with or has finalized defense equipment deals with several countries, including negotiations involving JF-17 jets and related weapons systems.

He noted that the aircraft’s marketability increased after it was deployed during last year’s conflict with India, the heaviest fighting between the two neighbors in decades.

The potential deal comes as Pakistan steps up efforts to expand arms exports and generate revenue from its defense industry.

On Tuesday, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the growing success of Pakistan’s weapons industry could significantly improve the country’s economic outlook.

“Our aircraft have been tested, and we are receiving so many orders that Pakistan may not need the IMF in six months,” he said.

Pakistan is currently under a $7bn IMF program, its 24th, which followed emergency financing in 2023 to avert a sovereign default, support made possible in part through financial backing from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies.

In recent months, Pakistan has stepped up its efforts to sell defense equipment overseas, finalizing multi-billion-dollar arms agreements and engaging with several countries over potential JF-17 fighter jet sales, as it seeks to strengthen its domestic defense industry and relieve economic strain.
