Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has dispatched 100 tons of relief supplies to Sri Lanka, in addition to a forty-five member Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR).
In response to the catastrophic flooding, triggered by Cyclone Ditwah-induced heavy downpours continuing through the last week and intensifying on Thursday, NDMA and Pakistan Navy both stepped up to respond to Sri Lanka’s appeal for help.
Pakistan Navy, through it ship “Saif,” already visiting Colombo on port call, took part in delivering essential supplies. “To support the affected communities, PNS Saif provided humanitarian relief supplies to Sri Lankan authorities to augment ongoing national relief efforts,” a statement by PN read.

“The aid package comprised food staples, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), dry rations, first-aid kits, emergency medicines and essential equipment,” it added.
NDMA’s dispatch contains life-saving and support items such as rescue boats, dewatering pumps, and life jackets. The search and rescue team will assist Sri Lankan rescue efforts.

The flooding in Sri Lanka has claimed over 300 lives while hundreds still remain missing. The catastrophe has displaced 78,000 people who are taking temporary refuge in shelters.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, on Friday, offered to support Sri Lanka in relief and rescue. Writing in a social media post, he said “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life from the floods in Sri Lanka.”
“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and those affected by this tragedy. Pakistan stands in full solidarity with our Sri Lankan brothers and sisters in this difficult time,” the DPM/FM added.
