Oman condoles South Korea over Roh Tae-woo’s death

Muscat, 1 November 2021 (TDI): The Sultan of Oman, Haitham Bin Tariq, sent his deepest condolences to South Korea’s President, Moon Jae-in, on Thursday following the death of the Republic of Korea’s Former President, Roh Tae-woo.

The Sultan exhibited great sadness over President Roh Tae-woo’s death and empathized with the deceased’s family and the people of South Korea. Tae-woo died on Tuesday at the age of 88, while dealing with a degenerative disorder followed by complications from various other illnesses.

Roh Tae-woo ruled South Korea from 1988-1993 and served as a key player in the 1979 coup that led Chun Doo-hwan, the coup leader, to become the Republic’s President. He is regarded as the last military-backed President of South Korea who established ties with Communist foes and tolerated the state’s transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Oman formally established diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Korea in 1974, where Seoul serves as Muscat’s fourth-largest export partner. The two states share a long history of strategic partnership, mainly defined by their trade-related projects.

Muscat provides large quantities of oil and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to South Korea. On the other hand, Seoul exports industrial products to Oman, including vessels, automobiles, hi-tech electronics, and construction materials.
