However, they stressed the urgent need to address bias in AI technologies integrated into news production and reporting.

AI becomes more embedded in media operations, it must ensure that these tools serve journalism integrity and not undermine it, they added.

AI poses a serious risk and balanced reporting. Karagoz called on media organizations to work collectively to establish an ethical framework for the use of AI in journalism.

The Ethical Challenges of AI in Newsrooms

OANA members discussed multiple issues in the media sector. They agreed that AI is used in newsrooms from automating tasks such as editing and translation to more complex functions like news curation and content generation.

Ozhan stressed the need for transparency in AI algorithms.

He said that AI must be a tool for inclusion, not exclusion. Technology does not marginalize voices or distort facts but instead helps to tell stories that matter.

The meeting focused on the collaboration among Asia-Pacific news agencies to share best practices on AI usage and to promote ethical standards in the application of AI within media.

AI, if used correctly, can strengthen journalism.

As part of the meeting, participants explored the implications of AI on global journalism.

They considered factors like content authenticity, fact-checking, and the impact on employment in the media sector.

The role of journalism is important even as AI becomes more widespread in newsrooms.

The 53rd OANA meeting ended with a commitment to continue addressing AI ethics at future gatherings.
