# New Zealand Joins EU, Australia in Sanctioning Israeli Settlers Over West Bank Violence

**Wellington (TDI):** New Zealand has joined Australia and the European Union in imposing travel bans on three Israeli individuals accused of involvement in violence linked to the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, amid rising international concern over escalating tensions in the territory.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced on Tuesday that the restrictions target three individuals who, according to Wellington, have “actively worked to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank, including through violence.” The measures bar them from entering New Zealand.

Peters said the decision aligns New Zealand with like-minded partners, including Australia and the European Union, and reflects growing concern that settler violence is undermining prospects for peace and stability in the region. He stressed that the sanctions are directed at specific individuals and are not aimed at the Israeli public or government.

The move comes as international scrutiny of violence in the occupied West Bank intensifies. United Nations experts have warned that attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians have reached alarming levels, contributing to forced displacement risks and worsening insecurity for Palestinian communities.

According to UN assessments, repeated incidents of intimidation, property destruction, and restricted access to land are making everyday life increasingly difficult for residents in affected areas. In some regions, the violence has been described as systematic, raising concerns that it could amount to an “existential threat” to Palestinian communities if left unchecked.

The UN experts have called on the international community to take urgent steps to protect civilians and ensure accountability under international law.

New Zealand first introduced travel restrictions related to settler violence in February 2024 and has since increasingly coordinated with Western partners adopting similar targeted measures against individuals linked to settlement expansion and attacks on Palestinians in the occupied territory.
