# New era of China-Iceland bilateral Relations

**Beijing, 23 December 2023 (TDI): **Permanent Secretary of State Martin Eyjolfsson met with Vice Minister of Commerce Ling Ji and Deputy Foreign Minister Deng Li to discuss the commercial and political scenario. The new era of China-Iceland bilateral relations benefits China-Europe ties.

According to Deng Li, Iceland was the first nation in Europe to negotiate a free trade agreement with China and maintain an independent, logical, and practical foreign policy. The volume of bilateral commerce between China and Iceland has expanded dramatically since the beginning of this year, and the two countries have restarted rapid exchanges.

Furthermore, China values Iceland’s commitment to the one-China concept and is prepared to enhance bilateral ties with Iceland and develop real-world collaboration in various areas, including trade and business, geothermal energy, and tourism.

According to Martin Eyjólfsson, this year celebrates the tenth anniversary of Iceland and China establishing their free trade agreement. The two nations have close governments, businesses, and people-to-people interactions, and their bilateral trade volume keeps breaking records.

##### **One-China Policy**

In addition, Iceland adheres to the [one-China policy](https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/wjdt_665385/wshd_665389/202312/t20231222_11209696.html#:~:text=Iceland%20abides%20by%20the%20one,change%20and%20other%20global%20challenges.). Iceland is willing to improve the free trade agreement with China. Also, to increase geothermal cooperation, promote interpersonal interactions, and work with other nations to address global issues like climate change.

Therefore, both officials discussed China-Iceland ties and furthered our cooperation on tourism, gender equality, and climate change concerns. It discussed human rights in China, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Middle East problems, and relations between China and Europe and China and the US.

Additionally, the two parties discussed critical problems of common interest and concern that were regional and global in scope. It points to the stronger political and economic ties between China and Iceland. Hence, the new era of China-Iceland bilateral relations improves China’s ties with Europe.
