New Deputy High Commissioner Appointed to Bangladesh

Dhaka, 20 August 2024 (TDI): The British High Commission in Dhaka welcomes James Goldman as the new British Deputy High Commissioner and Development Director to Bangladesh. His appointment comes at a critical time as Bangladesh navigates a period of political transition.

In his official statement, Goldman expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “I am delighted to have joined the British High Commission Dhaka and look forward to working with the interim government as it works to restore peace and order”, he said. He also expressed hopes for chartering a peaceful pathway to an “inclusive, prosperous and democratic future for the people of Bangladesh”.

This is an important position as the Deputy High Commissioner’s role is similar to that of a Consul General. He is responsible for representing the UK government and overseeing consular services, visa processing, and trade activities within their city or region. In some countries, the Deputy High Commissioner heads a subordinate office to the High Commission in another major city.

James Goldman’s Profile

James Goldman is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and Political Science with a Master’s in Conflict Studies. Goldman brings with him a wealth of experience in international diplomacy and development. Previously, he has served as His Majesty’s Consul General in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Between 2022 and 2023, he served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the British Embassy in Muscat, following his role as Deputy Head of Mission there in 2019.

In addition, he has played key roles in development and foreign policy since 2015 and served as Deputy Head of the UK’s £1 billion+ global Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund. In addition, he engaged in security and defence issues, including counterterrorism in South Asia and Africa, tackling piracy off the Horn of Africa and preventing the proliferation of Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear weapons even before 2025.
