NATO Seeks Clarity from US Over Troops Withdrawal from Germany

Brussels (TDI): NATO has said that it is seeking clarity from Washington following the United States’ decision to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany, as Europe signals a shift toward greater defense responsibility.

A spokesperson for NATO said the alliance is in contact with US authorities to better understand the details of the planned force adjustment in Germany. The move, she noted, highlights the need for European countries to increase defense spending and take on a larger role in ensuring regional security.

“We remain confident in our collective ability to maintain deterrence and defense,” the spokesperson said, adding that the shift reflects a broader transition toward a stronger European role within the alliance.

The development follows an announcement by the Pentagon that around 5,000 US troops will be withdrawn from Germany in the coming months.

US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is reviewing its military footprint in Europe, amid disagreements with allies over the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Tensions escalated after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised US strategy, saying Washington lacked a clear exit plan and was being “humiliated” in negotiations with Tehran.

Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the troop reduction was “foreseeable,” noting that Europe must increasingly rely on its own capabilities. He stressed that Germany is already working to strengthen its armed forces and accelerate defense procurement.
