Morocco organized Global Democracy Conference

Rabat, 26 November 2021 (TDI): Morocco organized a Global Conference on “Inclusive Democratic Participation to Prevent and Counter Violent Extremism”. Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita participated in the conference. The conference took place from 24-25 November 2021.

Morroccan Foreign Ministry organized the conference with the partnership of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, the Community of Democracy, and the National Human Rights Council-Morocco.

Remarks of the Speakers

Morocco hosted the conference in Rabat through hybrid means. Speaking at the conference, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita pointed out that the conference brings people together. Inclusive Democratic participation promotes and strengthen democracy. Likewise, it is also a way to fight violent extremism.

Furthermore, Minister highlighted Morocco’s role in the prevention of radicalization and the fight against terrorism. Besides, he also shared thoughts about the integration of women in peacekeeping and the peace process.

Moreover, Minister Nasser Bourita also highlighted the role of media and social media to prevent violent extremism, mainly for youth. Besides, he emphasized the use of digital platforms to counter extremism.

Foreign Minister of Romania, Bogdan Aurescu, participated virtually in the conference. He assured Romania support to strengthen democratic literacy, values and education through cooperation. Likewise, he pointed out that countering extremism is necessary for the resilience and protection of democracy.

Likewise, Thomas Garrett, Secretary-General of the Community of Democracies, pointed that extremism is a global phenomenon. It should not be linked to a specific region or people.

Clare Hutchinson, former NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, highlighted the role of young women and men in preventing and countering extremism and radicalization.

Community of Democracies

It was founded at the Ministerial conference in Poland in 2000. At the foundation, officials from 106 countries signed the Warsaw Declaration toward a Community of Democracies. Members pledged to keep democracies and support these values through different initiatives.

Furthermore, the community provides a forum where members identify global priorities for diplomatic action to advance and defend democracy. It also provides a forum for learning, common dialogue, and exchange of experiences.
