Mexico City, 5 December 2021 (TDI): Mexico received from the Federation of Russia, 900 thousand doses of the Sputnik V vaccine to fight against COVID-19. With this latest shipment of vaccines received from Russia, Mexico counts in total 20 million vaccines donated by Russia.

In that sense, the vaccines arrived at Terminal one of Mexico City International Airport. When the vaccines arrived it was left to 48 elements of the Mexican army for its transportation and safety.

The country counts about 3,897,452 coronavirus-related infections, which is a big number. Due to the consequences of this pandemic and the search for a solution to deal with it. Vaccination is one of the different ways to combat this Pandemic, and this donation came to help it.

Nevertheless, the Mexican Ministry of Health reiterates the significance of maintaining prevention measures to avoid new COVID-19 infections. The prevention tips are the use of masks mainly in closed areas, maintaining the safety distance and washing hands properly, or the use of alcohol gel.

Bilateral relations 

The relationship between Mexico and Russia started when Mexico acquired its independence and Russia still was an empire. In 1890 it when they formalized their relationship with diplomatic relations, however, the two parts interacted in other fields like science, traveling several years ago.

After the dissolution of the USSR, both parties assumed their previous commitment with treaties, and conventions to continue their relations. In 2004 President Vladimir Putin visited Mexico and it was the first time post soviet Union a Russian president visited Latin America.

In fact, in 2020 they celebrated 130 years of collaboration. To celebrate this anniversary, the Foreign Ministers of both countries practiced various activities. For instance, the XIII meeting of the Mechanism of political Consultations was one activity.

To conclude, this donation of Sputnik V is a confirmation of the will of Russia and Mexico to collaborate. Both countries share the conviction to guaranty universal access to COVID-19 vaccines.
