Maldivian President meets SAARC Secretary-General

Male, 11 October 2021 (TDI): Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Esala Ruwan Weerakoon has paid a courtesy call to Maldivian President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The meeting was held at the President’s Office this afternoon.

President Solih commended Weerakoon on his appointment as the new Secretary-General of SAARC. He welcomed him to the Maldives. President Solih praised SAARC’s work during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to SAARC cooperation.

The President expressed his desire that all SAARC member States should work harder to ensure human rights. He also stated that all member States should collaborate to address the climate emergency.

The Secretary-General expressed gratitude for the warm welcome. He also commended the Maldives’ vaccination program, saying that the Male serves as an example to others when it comes to vaccination. Also, both sides expressed assurance in further cultivating the existing ties. Both parties expressed commitment to work together to achieve mutually favorable outcomes.
