Legitimacy, Support will have to be earned, says Blinken

Washington, 2 September 2021 (TDI): United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in a speech on Monday that the legitimacy and support for the Taliban will have to be earned.

Blinken conveyed this message from the US to the Taliban as they seek international recognition and support. The Taliban can accomplish this by adhering to their commitments and obligations regarding freedom of travel; honoring the basic rights of the Afghan people, including women and minorities; adhering to their counterterrorism obligations; refraining from retaliatory violence against those who choose to remain in Afghanistan; forming an inclusive government which is capable of meeting the needs and reflecting the aspirations of the Afghan people.

More than 123,000 Afghans had been evacuated safely from Afghanistan. This comprises around 6,000 Americans. One of the most difficult missions in the nation’s history and a logistical and coordinating accomplishment unlike any other, this was a major military, diplomatic, and humanitarian endeavor. The evacuation was made possible by the efforts of a huge number of people. To that end, Blinken congratulated all of those efficient diplomats and professionals who worked extremely hard to manage the operation.
