Bishkek, 10 August 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, Zheenbek Kulubaev welcomed the newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator, Kristin Antje Grawe, on Tuesday.
Proceedings of the Meeting
The meeting started with the ceremony of handing credentials which accredit Kristin Antje Grawe as Resident Coordinator of the UN System in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Following that, the parties discussed the issues of bilateral cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN. During this discussion, the parties agreed on the development of cooperation between the UN office in Kyrgyzstan and the public bodies of the state.
This kind of cooperation fall under the new United Nations Development Assistance Framework signed on June 10, 2022.
The UN Resident Coordinator showed her willingness to continue work on the current projects in the Kyrgyz Republic, that are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On the other hand, Foreign Minister Kulubaev confirmed full support for UN activities in the Kyrgyz Republic. He discussed the work of Kyrgyzstan to promote initiatives on issues of sustainable mountain development and mountain ecosystem preservation.
He particularly noted the UN resolutions “Nature knows no borders…” and “International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, 2022”. The resolutions were adopted under Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives.
Minister Kulubaev further expressed the country’s aspirations to establish cooperation with other countries, UN institutions, and other stakeholders to implement the adopted resolutions and future international initiatives.
The UN Resident Coordinator positively noted the importance of all these initiatives. She also expressed her readiness to interact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant public bodies of the Kyrgyz Republic.
UN in the Kyrgyz Republic
The Kyrgyz Republic joined the United Nations on 2 March 1992 as a new independent state. Since then the UN has been supporting Kyrgyzstan to achieve its national priorities, which respond to the SDGs.
The UN System in Kyrgyzstan is made up of UN-affiliated programs, funds, specialized agencies and other entities working in the country. At present, it consists of 27 members, 12 of which are non-residents.
The aim of the UN system in the Kyrgyz Republic is to assist the country in implementing development reforms and provide support for the achievement of internationally agreed SDGs.
