Kyrgyzstan Set to Recognize Women’s Entrepreneurship in Law

Bishkek (TDI): Kyrgyzstan’s parliament, the Jogorku Kenesh, has approved amendments to enshrine the concept of “women’s entrepreneurship” in the country’s Law on the Protection of Entrepreneurs’ Rights.

The bill, passed in its third reading, aims to formally recognize women entrepreneurs as a distinct category within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The legislative initiative, spearheaded by six deputies, including Kamila Talieva and Eldar Abakirov, seeks to boost the growth of small and microbusinesses led by women.

The move draws inspiration from global best practices, officials said.

Official data highlights significant gender disparities in Kyrgyzstan’s workforce.

In 2020, only 43% of working-age women were employed, compared to 70.9% of men.

Employment rates for women in rural areas stood at just 40.6%.

Additionally, women account for 69% of the economically inactive population, with the vast majority engaged in unpaid household work.

Proponents of the bill argue that recognizing women entrepreneurs in law will expand access to government support, fostering greater economic participation.

The initiative is expected to address systemic barriers, promote gender equality, and strengthen social cohesion by empowering women in business.

Lawmakers expressed hope that the reforms would contribute to economic stability and enhance the wellbeing of Kyrgyz society.
