Kenya and Pakistan to expand bilateral trade

-

Nairobi, 1 September 2021(TDI):  On Tuesday, Kenya and Pakistan have agreed to end a long-running tariff war that had harmed bilateral trade, particularly Kenyan tea exports. For a long time, both countries had been cooperating on several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for trade and investment cooperation.

Betty Maina, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade, and Enterprise Development, announced on Tuesday that two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) on plant protection that were initiated in 2016 on Mangoes and Citrus imports from Pakistan have been completed and are ready for signature. She also stated that Kenya has prepared and shared two (MOUs) on avocado and nut exports to Pakistan for evaluation and that they are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

According to Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Saqlain Syedah, Pakistan imports roughly 40% of Kenya’s export sales and is currently the country’s fourth-largest export destination. As stated by government statistics, the total trade between Kenya and Pakistan in 2020 was valued at 77.4 billion shillings, 705 million US dollars.

After Uganda, Pakistan is Kenya’s second most important export destination, with trade between the two countries favoring Kenya.
