# Kazakhstan Shows Progress in Anti-Money Laundering Efforts

**Astana (TDI):** Kazakhstan has improved its position in the 2025 Basel AML Index, ranking 111th out of 164 countries.

The Basel Institute on Governance publishes this ranking, which assesses countries based on their vulnerability to money laundering and the effectiveness of their controls.

Kazakhstan is now one of the top three performers among Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, behind only Armenia and Moldova.

Its score improved slightly from 4.71 in 2024 to 4.65 in 2025, showing progress in anti-money laundering efforts.

Belarus, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine are ranked lower but still behind Kazakhstan.

Globally, Myanmar, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have the highest risk levels, while San Marino, Iceland, and Finland rank as the safest from money laundering threats.

Experts emphasize that the Basel Index measures risk levels and institutional readiness rather than actual money laundering activity.
