Tokyo (TDI): Japan’s Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A- and H- Bomb Sufferers Organizations, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its tireless efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
The organization which represents survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has dedicated decades to raising global awareness of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare and advocating for nuclear disarmament.
Founded in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has been a persistent voice in international forums, including the United Nations. He urges the global community to commit to complete nuclear disarmament.
The Nobel Committee praised the organization for its relentless advocacy and survivor testimonies. This have shaped the world’s understanding of nuclear warfare’s human cost.

In their announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that Nihon Hidankyo’s work stands as a profound reminder of the horrors of nuclear weapons and their efforts.
These efforts have been instrumental in driving international treaties and disarmament initiatives.
Although, their message of peace and disarmament has continued to inspire against nuclear weapons.
Sueichi Kido Secretary-General of Nihon Hidankyo expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, dedicating the award to all survivors of the atomic bombings and their lifelong commitment to peace.
The Nobel Peace Prize is a tribute to the resilience and courage of all Hibakusha. He said he would continue to work tirelessly to ensure that no one else suffers from the devastating effects of nuclear weapons.
The Nobel Committee acknowledged Nihon Hidankyo’s pivotal role in supporting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), an international treaty adopted in 2017, and its contribution to fostering dialogue between nuclear and non-nuclear states.
Moreover, the reward brings renewed attention to the ongoing global disarmament movement. This strengthens Japan’s legacy as a leader advocating for a world free from nuclear weapons.
