Tokyo, 1 September 2021 (TDI): Japanese Foreign Minister, Motegi Toshimitsu held a meeting with the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) John F. Kerry on Tuesday, to discuss their initiative concerning the global challenge of climate change.
According to the joint media statement, the United States and Japan will lead the efforts of the international community for global de-carbonization looking ahead to G20, COP26, and beyond. It is a top priority issue for Japan and at the Climate Summit. Moreover, Prime Minister Suga declared Japan’s ambitious target for 2030 toward carbon neutrality.
This goal can be progressed through innovation, Motegi said. Japan will make the utmost use of its world-leading technologies as the key to achieve the high-level target. Kerry responded with his plans, activities, as well as U.S.’s efforts to climate change.
The two sides reached a consensus toward collaboration for Climate Partnership on ambition, global de-carbonization, and clean energy. Recognizing the importance of cooperation with developing countries, including major emitters, in their emission reduction efforts, including the Japan-U.S. Climate Partnership and the Quad (Japan-US-Australia-India) significant change can come about.
