Tokyo, 19 October 2022 (TDI): Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, and Foreign Miniter Hayashi Yoshimasa expressed condolences to the Federal Republic of Nigeria over damages caused by floods on October 19, 2022.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan released a statement quoting condolence messages from the Foreign Minister as well as the Prime Minister of Japan to their Nigerian counterparts.
Prime Minister Fumio said to Nigeria’s President, Muhammad Buhari, “It felt so sad after hearing about recent floods caused by heavy rainfall in Nigeria costing many precious lives and mass evacuation.”
Moreover, he expressed sympathy and condolence to Nigerian people who lost their lives and families on the behalf of people of Japan. He further offered support to the Government of Nigeria in the reconstruction of affected areas.
Likewise, Japanese Foreign Minister, Hayashi Yoshimasa also delivered a condolence message to the Foreign Minister of Nigeria, Geoffrey Onyeama following serious damages caused by heavy floods in many states of Nigeria.
He said, “I am deeply grieved by the news about recent flood calamities caused by heavy rainfall in the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

“I would like to express heartfelt condolence to Nigerians who lost their lives, properties, and loved ones because of the floods,” Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa said.
He further prayed for the quick recovery of affected people and prompt reconstruction of affected areas.
Floods in Nigeria
In recent days, Nigeria has been hit by the worst flooding the West African Nation has seen in a decade. More than 600 people lost their lives, 1.3 billion people have been displaced, and more than 200,000 homes have been destroyed.
Japan-Nigeria Relations
Japan and Nigeria are in bilateral relations for many years. Diplomatic relations between both countries officially started when Japan officially recognized Nigeria as a nation on 1 October 1960.
Japan and Nigeria have deepened trade ties in recent years. Both countries signed a bilateral trade organization, named Japan-Nigeria Business Facilitation Council. Both Nigeria and Japan held their Embassies in Tokyo and Abuja, respectively.
