# Israel Blocks Gaza Aid Flotilla, Drawing Global Outcry

**Gaza (TDI):** Israeli forces halted 13 boats carrying activists and humanitarian supplies bound for Gaza, though another 30 vessels are still attempting to reach the enclave, according to flotilla organizers.

Footage released by Israel’s foreign ministry showed Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg surrounded by armed soldiers on one of the seized boats.

“Several ships from the Hamas-Sumud flotilla have been intercepted, and their passengers are being taken to an Israeli port. Greta and the others are safe and unharmed,” Israel’s foreign ministry said in a post on X.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail with over 40 civilian boats carrying around 500 parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists, was transporting food and medical aid. Organizers released videos on Telegram in which passengers displayed their passports and claimed they had been forcibly taken to Israel, stressing that their mission was strictly humanitarian and non-violent.

The flotilla, seen as the most visible challenge to Israel’s long-standing blockade of Gaza, drew significant international attention as it crossed the Mediterranean. Governments including Turkiye, Spain, and Italy had deployed boats and drones to protect their nationals if needed. Israel, however, had issued repeated warnings for the vessels to turn back.

Turkiye’s foreign ministry labelled Israel’s interception “an act of terror” that endangered civilians. Colombian President Gustavo Petro went further, ordering the expulsion of Israel’s diplomats after two Colombians were detained. He also cancelled Colombia’s free trade agreement with Israel, calling the detentions a possible “new international crime” by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also condemned the move, saying eight Malaysians were detained. “By blocking a humanitarian mission, Israel has displayed utter disregard not only for Palestinian rights but for the conscience of the world,” he said.

The interceptions sparked protests in Italy and Colombia, where Italian unions even called a general strike in solidarity with the flotilla, Reuters reported.

Israel’s navy argued that the flotilla had been warned it was entering a combat zone in violation of a “lawful blockade.” Officials said any aid could have been delivered through approved humanitarian channels.

Flotilla organizers rejected this, accusing Israeli forces of boarding their ships illegally in international waters about 70 nautical miles from Gaza. They said water cannons were used, but no injuries were reported. Communications from the ships were disrupted, and live camera feeds were cut off.

By early Thursday, 13 boats had been stopped, while 30 others remained at sea, about 46 nautical miles from Gaza. Organisers insisted they would “continue undeterred.”
