# Independence, Leadership and Strengthening of National Thought in Tajikistan

“Independence is for us a clear and indisputable proof of the stability of the state, the survival of the nation, a symbol of national origin and identity, a manifestation of historical ideals and aspirations, an international passport and a way for the independent country of Tajikistan to join the civilized world.”

~Emomali Rahmon

History is evidence that the 20th century began for Tajiks with the establishment of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (in 1929). Although this time provided certain opportunities for the revival of national culture, at the same time the restriction of language and history was felt. After centuries, Tajikistan gained its state independence on September 9, 1991. This important historical event occurred after many years of struggle for freedom and at the same time in difficult political and economic conditions.

In the early years of independence, the country faced many problems: misunderstandings, civil war, a devastated economy, and distrust of the future. It was during this period and under such circumstances that the arrival of the Leader of the Nation, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon, became a historic and fateful event. With great efforts and sacrifices of the nation’s children, the long-awaited peace was achieved, and since then Tajikistan has been on the path of peace, stability, and construction.

As the head of state noted in one of his speeches: “The lofty ideals of independence, patriotism and humanity, freethinking and free-thinking, science and education, benevolence and tolerance, unity and friendship, in short, noble ethics and good human virtues are the indelible heritage of all our great ancestors, which guide the Tajik people and the people of the world towards a good future and a happy life.”

It is undeniable that Tajiks are one of the most ancient peoples of the East and the world. They have traversed a rich and varied historical path, not only preserving their national identity but also making a significant contribution to the formation of world civilization. The historical journey of the Tajiks is full of instructive and inspiring lessons. Throughout history, they have been repeatedly threatened, yet they have always proven their national identity.

One of the golden periods in Tajik history was the formation of the Samanid Empire (819–999), which became the first national Tajik state to achieve prominence after Islam. Along with strengthening its political and economic foundations, this state became a major center of culture, science, and education.

After the collapse of the Samanid Empire, Tajik lands repeatedly passed through the hands of various dynasties, but this civilized people managed to preserve their national language and culture despite threats from foreigners and passed on their scientific and cultural traditions from generation to generation. It was precisely this will and historical self-awareness that allowed the Tajik nation to survive political events and preserve its identity.

It is no secret that independence is a great blessing, a blessing every nation strives for. The true meaning of independence is freedom from oppression and tyranny, the right to autonomy, and the ability to govern the state according to one’s will. Along with the attainment of state independence, a revival of national thought also began.

In other words, independence is a symbol of the nation’s freedom and happiness, and national thought is the solid foundation of statehood and the means of preserving this great blessing. National thought signifies a sense of patriotism, pride in history and culture, respect for and protection of language and national values. A nation without national thought is like a rootless tree that quickly withers.

Today, the Republic of Tajikistan is on a path of development and creation. Independence has given us the opportunity to revive our national values, introduce young people to historical heroes, adopt our native language as the state language, develop science, culture, and education based on national traditions, rediscover ourselves, revive our rich history and culture, and demonstrate to the world that we are an ancient and civilized nation.

It is worth noting that one of the pillars of national thought is love for the Motherland, pride in the past, respect for the native language, culture, and heroes of our people. The state independence of the Tajik people also laid a real foundation for the revival and strengthening of national thought.

Within the framework of the concept of independence and national thought, we can embody the following values: boundless love for the nation and native land; protection of the national language and culture; pride in and recognition of great historical and literary figures; respect for the customs and traditions of our people; and, of course, the desire for the sustainable development of our state and homeland and the making of a valuable contribution. The independence of our homeland has created all the conditions for preserving all these values alive and enduring.

It is worth noting that the Founder of Peace and National Unity, the Leader of the Nation, and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon, plays a historic and unique role in preserving independence and reviving and strengthening the national idea. The Leader of the Nation always emphasizes that the Tajik people have a millennia-long history, a beautiful and elegant Tajik language, and a rich culture. Along with the strengthening of independence and freedom, a culture of tolerance, respect for others, and national integrity have simultaneously become core values of society.

The Tajik language has received state status; national values have been revived; museums and cultural centers have been built; modern educational institutions and libraries have been established. Furthermore, at the initiative and with the support of the Head of State, historical and literary books were published, the Tajik language was granted the status of state language, national holidays were revived, and cultural monuments were restored and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It is thanks to the efforts of the Leader of the Nation that today’s youth can proudly study the history of their people, respect their national culture, and study in their native language. Awakening national consciousness in the hearts of the younger generation and youth plays a vital role in the stability of the state and nation.

As already mentioned, the national idea is one of the main foundations of statehood and the existence of any nation, and the concept of a national idea is a profound sense of patriotism, pride in language, history, culture, and national values. In the modern history of Tajikistan, the revival and strengthening of the national idea are associated with the name of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon.

The Leader of the Nation is not only a political leader but also the author of several historical and cultural works, in which the history of the nation, language, culture, our religious and cultural values, as well as national identity and national idea, occupy a central place. One of the most valuable works of the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon, is “Tajiks in the Mirror of History.” This book presents the ancient history of the Tajik nation and the role of outstanding personalities of the nation in world civilization.

This book was written at a time when the country was experiencing an identity crisis and national uncertainty following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It analyzes and explains the thousand-year history of the Tajiks, from the Aryan era to the Samanids, based on reliable evidence and documents. This book is not only a history book but also a means of awakening a sense of national pride and raising national consciousness among the younger generation.

Another important work by the Leader of the Nation is “The Language of the Nation—The Existence of the Nation,” dedicated to describing the Tajik language and its role in national stability. In this work, the Leader of the Nation, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon, emphasizes that language is one of the most important elements of national consciousness and identity. Therefore, preserving and developing the state language is the duty of every conscientious person.

It is worth remembering that without political independence, the revival of national thought is impossible. In his numerous works, including the annual “Independence and Revival of the Nation” series, the Leader of the Nation emphasizes the inextricable link between independence and national identity, spirituality, and the development of a national democratic state. Cultural and historical themes are widely covered in other books by the esteemed Leader of the Nation, such as “Sarazm: A Golden Treasure in the History of the Tajik People,” “A Look at Aryan History and Civilization,” “Aryans and the Knowledge of Aryan Civilization,” and “Unchanging Faces,” and they present a comprehensive analysis of the contribution of Tajiks to world civilization.

Other works by the Leader of the Nation, including “Foreign Policy of the Republic of Tajikistan” and “Independence and Security of Tajikistan,” also generally address the issue of protecting national values, national culture, and strengthening the foundations of national statehood. These works were written with the goal of strengthening national identity and instilling a sense of civic responsibility.

Indeed, today Tajiks are confidently moving toward a bright future, drawing on their ancestral history and culture. It was independence that gave us the opportunity to rediscover ourselves, revive our rich history and culture, and show the world that we are an ancient and civilized nation. National thought is the solid foundation of statehood and the means to preserve this great gift, and it must become an integral part of the upbringing and education of youth.

Thus, state independence is the guarantor of national progress and the revival of ancestral culture. The leader of the nation, Emomali Rahmon, plays a historic and unique role in the revival of national thought. Because in his scholarly and historical works, he turned to history and transformed the idea of national thought, self-knowledge, and patriotism into a school of enlightenment and spirituality. His works will continue to serve as a guide for true self-knowledge, the understanding of the Tajik nation, and civilization.

In short, every patriotic and honest citizen must treasure independence and nurture nationalism in their minds and hearts. Therefore, we must learn from history and not allow our enemies to threaten our independence again. Only by possessing a strong sense of nationalism can we defend our independence and pass it on to future generations as a sacred value.
