Kabul, 8 September 2022 (TDI): Teams from the Afghan Red Crescent (ARC), assisted by the International Federation of Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), have provided cash assistance to flood affectees in Kabul to rebuild homes destroyed by flash floods.

IFRC-ARC Assistance

Volunteers and employees of the Afghan Red Crescent (ARC) have been continuously working to provide food packages, blankets, tarpaulins, and other forms of relief to the affected areas.

Moreover, prior to the floods, the people of Afghanistan were in need of safety and humanitarian assistance due to the drought.

The drought resulted in deforestation and desertification, decreased agricultural productivity, economic hardship, hunger, and human loss.

The two natural disasters combined have led countless people to face an unknown and hazardous future. These impacted individuals have been compelled to leave their residences due to both flash floods and droughts, previously.

Impact of Floods in Afghanistan

The spring flooding in 2022 has been at its lowest level over the previous five years, while the summer flooding saw an increase in unusual floods from June to this date.

The floods affected several parts of the country and more than 2000 casualties have been caused. Despite the devastation these have caused for the local populations, annual averages have not changed.

Moreover, while the majority of short-term emergency supplies are readily available, additional development assistance to rebuild destroyed homes is still needed.

In addition, restoring livelihoods through the replenishment of livestock and grain, and putting preventive investments (such as the construction of dams or the institution of early warning systems) into place can lessen prolonged suffering.

These measures can also prevent further risks of being exposed to both natural disasters and weather patterns shocks if implemented on time.

IFRC

The objective of the International Federation of Red Crescent Societies is to help the most vulnerable people by organizing emergency international aid for those impacted by natural and man-made catastrophes.

Besides this, these disasters may be those that have been forcibly displaced in times of health crises. Its mission includes enhancing the member organizations’ abilities to carry out efficient activities.

Moreover, these activities might be humanitarian assistance, emergency planning, and healthcare and community care initiatives.
