# Hungary Signals Policy Shift, PM-Elect Peter Magyar Backs ICC Warrant for Netanyahu

**Budapest (TDI):** Hungary’s Prime Minister-elect Peter Magyar has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must be arrested if he enters Hungarian territory, in line with obligations under the International Criminal Court.

Speaking to reporters, Magyar stressed that as an ICC member state, Hungary would be required to detain any individual subject to an active warrant. “If a country is a member of the ICC and a person who is wanted by the ICC enters our territory, then that person must be taken into custody,” he said.

The remarks signal a sharp departure from the policy of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose government declined to act on the ICC warrant during Netanyahu’s visit in April 2025.

Magyar also pledged to halt Hungary’s planned withdrawal from the ICC, a move that would align Budapest more closely with international legal frameworks and reverse a decision expected to take effect later this year.

The leadership change is already reverberating across the European Union, where Hungary under Orbán had frequently blocked key decisions. EU officials now anticipate progress on long-delayed measures, including a €90 billion financial package for Ukraine and potential sanctions related to Israeli settlements.

Diplomats say Hungary’s shift could remove a major obstacle to a more unified EU foreign policy, particularly on contentious issues involving Israel and the Middle East.

Separately, legal pressure on Netanyahu has intensified elsewhere. Authorities in Türkiye have prepared an indictment against 35 suspects, including the Israeli premier, over an armed intervention involving a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza. The charges reportedly include crimes against humanity, genocide, and other serious offenses.

Analysts describe Hungary’s policy shift as a significant development that could reshape both EU diplomacy and broader international responses to ongoing conflicts, particularly in the Middle East.
