Global Philanthropists Pledge $300M for Climate Initiatives at COP30

Belém (TDI): The Climate and Health Funders Coalition has pledged an initial $300 million to address both the causes of climate change and its impacts on health.

This collaborative effort, involving over 35 leading philanthropies, aims to tackle the urgent public health crisis exacerbated by climate change.

Announced at COP30 in Belém on Thursday, this funding initiative supports the implementation of the Belém Health Action Plan, a transformative framework that centers human health in global climate action.

The Belém Health Action Plan aims to enhance global health resilience against climate change by establishing strong climate-linked health surveillance systems and strengthening response capacities to outbreaks and extreme weather.

It promotes the implementation of evidence-based policies and invests in research, technology, and infrastructure to protect at-risk populations.

“Adaptation is a question of survival in the short run,” declared Brazil’s Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, while launching the Action Plan.

“The most recent Lancet Countdown Report on Climate and Health is clear: 3.3 to 3.6 billion people live in highly vulnerable climate areas, and hospitals [in those areas] face a 41% risk of suffering from extreme weather events.

The initiative, launched by the Climate and Health Funders Coalition, is designed to address the rising challenges posed by extreme heat, air pollution, and climate-sensitive infectious diseases, which now impact an estimated 3.3 billion individuals around the world, with particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries.

The funds will enhance the integration of vital climate and health data, ultimately strengthening resilient health systems that protect communities and their livelihoods.

The Climate and Health Funders Coalition connects a global network of donors focused on strengthening public health systems and advancing climate adaptation.

By working collectively, the coalition aims to attract long-term investments from various sectors to tackle the challenges posed by climate change on health.
