“Ambassador Prothmann has been a valued partner to the Forum and to the Pacific,” Secretary General Waqa said, acknowledging the ambassador’s role in advancing cooperation on some of the region’s most pressing challenges.

Germany has been a Forum Dialogue Partner since 2016, a status that has underpinned a decade of structured engagement with the Pacific community.

Under that framework, Berlin has moved beyond symbolic solidarity to lead tangible initiatives in areas directly aligned with Pacific priorities; most notably climate resilience, loss and damage financing, blue carbon ecosystems, and biodiversity conservation.

These are not peripheral concerns for Pacific Island nations. For a region on the frontlines of climate change — where rising seas, intensifying cyclones, and coral bleaching pose existential threats.

The loss and damage agenda, which gained significant international momentum at COP27 and COP28, has been of particular importance to low-lying Forum members seeking accountability and financial redress from high-emitting nations.

Germany’s engagement with blue carbon also aligns closely with Pacific nations’ efforts to leverage their vast ocean territories as both environmental assets and negotiating tools in global climate talks.

Dr. Prothmann’s farewell call reflects a broader pattern of high-level diplomatic engagement that has characterized Germany’s Pacific pivot in recent years.
