# Foreign Ministers of Tajikistan and Pakistan meet

Tashkent, 29 July 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The meeting between the two Foreign Ministers took place on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Bilawal reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability in the region in addition to enhancing economic cooperation.

##### Bilateral Relations between Pakistan and Tajikistan**

After Tajikistan’s independence and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Pakistan was amongst the first countries that recognized Tajikistan.

Both countries share common membership in various multilateral organizations. These include the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Two nations have steadily grown trade and cooperation. While several summits have been held on how to improve bilateral trade.

##### **Official Visits**

In November 2015, Tajik President paid a [visit](https://mofa.gov.pk/visit-of-the-president-of-tajikistan-to-pakistan-curtain-raiser/) to Pakistan. He met with the Prime Minister of Pakistan and this was President Rahmon’s sixth visit to Pakistan. Moreover, this was part of regular high-level exchanges between the two brotherly countries.

Most importantly, the visit was a way forward in Pakistan-Tajikistan relations. Likewise, it opened new opportunities for Pakistan to bolster its relations with the Central Asian states.

In June 2021, the President of Tajikistan visited Pakistan at the request of Pakistan’s Prime Minister. Thus, both sides made a joint [declaration](https://mofa.gov.pk/pakistan-tajikistan-joint-declaration-on-next-steps-in-building-strategic-partnership-for-regional-solidarity-and-integration/#:~:text=On%20the%20invitation%20of%20Prime,was%20adopted%20during%20the%20visit.) regarding the “Next Steps in Building Strategic Partnership for Regional Solidarity and Integration”.

Due to the regular exchange of visits between the two countries, cordial ties have been strengthened between the two governments.

Also, in June 2014, Pakistani former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Tajikistan focused on the reinstallation of the CASA-1000 project. Furthermore, a Joint Commission on Energy and Infrastructure was established as well.

In 2015, Sharif [visited](https://mofa.gov.pk/visit-of-the-prime-minister-of-paksitan-mr-muhammad-nawaz-sharif-to-tajikistan-on-09-10-june-2015-2/) Dushanbe on a two-day official visit to attend the International Conference on “Water for Life” 2005-25.

Sharif was accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Minister for Water and Power, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Chairman WAPDA, and senior officials.
