Azerbaijan and Turkiye

In the Nakoro Karabakh war, Azerbaijan has great support from Turkiye. Azerbaijan regained its control over the territories occupied by Armenia with the help of the supply of arms by Turkiye and Israel. Azerbaijan’s latest maneuver would not have been possible without strong support from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Recently, after hostilities started between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Turkish Foreign minister stated “Turkey will continue to stand by Azerbaijan and will never leave it alone.”

Turkiye reiterated its support for its ally Azerbaijan, with Defence Minister Hulusi Akar quoted by his ministry as saying that Ankara “will continue to stand by it in its just causes”.

On 9 November 1991, Türkiye became the first state to recognize the Republic of Azerbaijan.  The state declared its independence on 30 August 1991. Both states established diplomatic relations on 14 January 1992. The Consulate General in Baku was upgraded to the Embassy level.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Türkiye’s relations with Azerbaijan are multifaceted and at the strategic level. Frequent high-level contacts are the main driving force of their bilateral relations.

It became a tradition that, high-level officials visit each other’s countries immediately after assuming office. They also visit in the wake of developments with symbolic importance.
