First Super Blue Moon of 2024 to Light up Sky

-

Islamabad, 19 August 2024 (TDI): The first super blue moon of 2024 is set to be visible across the world on Monday, including in Pakistan.

The phenomenon occurs when the full moon is closer to the planet Earth than usual, making it appear larger and brighter in the night sky.

This particular super moon, also known as a seasonal blue moon, happens about once every 2.5 years, according to scientists.

It is the third full moon of 4 within the current season, which spans from the summer solstice to the autumn equinox.

Despite its name, the moon will not appear blue.

The term “super moon” refers to a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest distance to the planet.
In this instance, the distance between the centers of the planet and the moon will be 361,969 kilometers.

The super moon will may initially appear with an orange tint because of atmospheric dust and particles scattering the reflected sunlight.
As it ascends, it will take on its usual silvery-white color and remain visible throughout the night until sunrise on Tuesday.

While the super moon might seem brighter and larger than a typical full moon, most observers may not notice a considerable difference, particularly if visibility is affected by clouds or artificial lights.
The apparent size of the moon can also be hard to gauge when it is high in the sky.
