Executive secretary of UNESCAP attends Sustainable Development Conference (SDC)

Islamabad, 6 December 2022 (TDI): Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana visited Islamabad.

Secretary Alisjahbana attended the Silver Jubilee flagship annual Sustainable Development Conference (SDC) on 5 December.

The 25th Sustainable Development Conference (SDC) of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) on “Sustainable Development in Unusual Times: Building Forward Better” kicked off on 5th December.

The Conference will continue till 8th December. The conference is held alongside the Sixth South and South-West Asia (SSWA) Forum on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UNESCAP and the Government of Pakistan are the collaborators in the conference. The Executive Secretary of UNESCAP attended the conference as a chief guest.

While the other attendees include the Deputy Planning Minister of the Maldives, the Minister of State for Finance of Sri Lanka, and the Vice Chair of the Planning Commission of Nepal.

Moreover, in 11 plenary sessions & 35 panels, 350 dignitaries, presenters, & experts from the United Nations (UN), the government, academia, civil society, the media, and the commercial sector will be speaking from around the nation, and 16 other nations.

This year’s conference will evaluate the advancement of the SDGs. These SDGs include Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), and Goal 17 in addition to the SDC sub-themes (Partnership for the goals).

The SDC will be covering three streams. The first is Economic Meltdown. Second is Achieving SDGs amidst Unusual Times. The last is Striving for a Common Future in a Polarised World

In-depth seminars on topics such as gender, education, trade, energy, food security, sustainable cities, and partnership strategies for attaining the SDGs will be held during the Conference.
