Brussels, March 12, 2024 (TDI): President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen just announced a major recommendation to start talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina about joining the EU.
This decision is based on Herzegovina and Bosnia’s efforts to meet the EU’s requirements and the desires of its people to be part of the EU family.
President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Bosnia and Herzegovina is proving it can meet the criteria for EU membership, and that its people want to join our family. That’s why today, I’m recommending to the Council to start talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

She highlighted that Bosnia and Herzegovina are making good progress in following the EU’s rules and values.

Ursula acknowledges the country’s work on improving democracy, following the law and making social and economic changes.
President Ursula von der Leyen’s recommendation acknowledges how far Bosnia and Herzegovina has come to join the EU.
She emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina are determined to keep moving forward, despite challenges, and to become part of the EU community.
Negotiations for EU Membership
She highlighted that Herzegovina and Bosnia have an important job ahead to engage in talks with the EU, address any issues that come up, and keep making changes to meet EU standards.
She emphasized that starting talks is a big step, but it’s just the beginning for Bosnia and Herzegovina about joining the EU.
