Ethiopia Backs Pakistan in Fight Against Climate Change: Envoy

Islamabad (TDI): Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary of Ethiopia to Pakistan, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, called on President Asif Ali Zardari, at the President’s official residence.

The purpose of the visit was to extend condolences on the damages and the loss of lives in the ongoing floods, especially in the country’s north.

The floods have claimed over 300 lives, dozens remain missing while an emergency has been declared in Karachi as downpours have not stopped in the city for a over a day. Fears of urban flooding are rising by the minute.

Ambassador Beker expressed grief over the loss of lives, adding that Pakistan is among the countries whose contribution to climate change is minimal, yet is paying heavy price for the actions of others.

He said that Ethiopia stands with the government and people of Pakistan in its fight against climate change and climate catastrophes, and expressed solidarity in these tough times.

President Zardari said Pakistan values its relations with Ethiopia and appreciates the growing cooperation between two countries in peace and security, trade, investment, aviation, science and technology, and especially climate change.

Ethiopian Ambassador has been very dedicated to plantation drives and campaigns all across Pakistan, and has recently took lead in the ‘700 million plants in one day’ campaign in partnership with Pakistan’s Climate Change Ministry.
