New York, 23 September 2021 (TDI): Estonia Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets had attended several meetings in the opening week of the UN General Assembly’s 76th session in New York on September 20.
She centred most of her discussion on the situation in Afghanistan and the protection of children’s rights.
Liimets met with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General Virginia Gamba to exchange views on the cooperation toward children in the context of conflict zones. Estonia is committed to the protection of children in armed conflicts, and Gamba recognizes it. Both sides see that children are the most vulnerable in crisis situations. Therefore, Limmets emphasized drawing attention to this. Also, Gamba and Liimets reaffirmed to maintain close cooperation beyond Estonia’s membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Moreover, Limmets also met with the Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa Shaheen Almarar to discuss Estonia as a member of the UNSC. Noting that small states had contributed significant developments in the Council. Moreover, Liimets expressed her honour of UAE’s success with the upcoming EXPO while Estonia will participate in the digital society.
Lastly, Liimets had a bilateral meeting with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani about sharing Estonia’s e-governance and security issues in the Middle East region. Also, the two ministers touched upon the situation in Afghanistan.
Regarding the informal meeting of European Union foreign affairs ministers, Afghanistan is also the centre of discussion. Where Estonia will closely monitor the issue together with Norway. Both sides will find ways to enhance their cooperation with the countries across the region and respond to the humanitarian crisis. Furthermore, Liimets met with the ambassador of Afghanistan in New York.
