# Economy Stabilizing, Trump Meeting ‘Encouraging’: PM Shehbaz

**New York (TDI):** Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said Pakistan’s economy was stabilizing at the micro level, with inflation falling and interest rates easing, while praising overseas Pakistanis for their vital support.

Speaking to the media after addressing the UN General Assembly, the premier noted that when his government assumed office the country faced “serious challenges.”

“Inflation was at 32% and the policy rate stood at 22.5%. Today, in just a year and a half, inflation has dropped into single digits and the rate is down to 11%. At the micro level, the economy is now stable,” he said.

He lauded expatriates as “great ambassadors,” pointing out that remittances reached $38.5 billion in FY 2024–25. “Their support has been crucial for Pakistan’s economic stability,” he added.

Shehbaz termed his reception in Saudi Arabia as “unprecedented in the last 40 years” and described his meeting with US President Donald Trump as “very encouraging.”

He said Washington had shown readiness to invest in Pakistan’s trade, IT and other sectors. “We discussed the economy, counterterrorism, minerals, artificial intelligence, IT and cryptocurrency,” he noted, adding that tariff issues were also raised. “Minerals pricing and trade agreements will be decided fairly and in mutual interest.”

The prime minister also reflected on recent military successes, crediting Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his leadership.

“From May 6 to 10, our armed forces bravely defeated India in the war. We shot down seven enemy planes and carried out strikes in Delhi, Pathankot and other locations,” he claimed.

Shehbaz further said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio contacted COAS Munir on May 10 with a ceasefire message from India. “We had already won the war. We accepted the ceasefire to avoid further escalation,” he said.

He added that India’s changed attitude was proof of Pakistan’s strength, “Those who once never spoke properly are now embracing you.”

Earlier, Shehbaz met UN Secretary-General António Guterres and urged the UN to play a stronger role in addressing global challenges.

He praised Guterres’ leadership and thanked the UN for recognising Pakistan’s flood relief efforts. “Thousands were affected, and the UN’s recognition really matters,” he said.

Highlighting climate vulnerability, Shehbaz stressed extra support for the hardest-hit nations. He also raised the Kashmir dispute, noting India’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, and called for UN intervention.

Turning to Gaza, the prime minister demanded an immediate ceasefire, rapid aid delivery and the creation of a Palestinian state. “Pakistan will continue to work for peace. As a Security Council member, we must do our part,” he said.

Guterres, in response, commended Pakistan’s consistent role at the UN, saying the country had played a “practical role in maintaining dialogue and stability.”
