# Commonwealth Appoints Two Deputy Secretaries-General

The Commonwealth Secretariat has appointed two new Deputy Secretaries-General as the 56-member organization gears up for a major heads-of-government summit later this year.

The appointment signals a push to sharpen both its ambitions and internal operations. Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey announced the appointments of Ambassador Tanmaya Lal of India and British-Australian executive Tania Baumann.

Lal, appointed Deputy Secretary-General (Programs), assumed his role in March 2026, while Baumann took up her position as Deputy Secretary-General (Corporate) on 21 May.

As the programs chief, Lal will steer the Secretariat’s work across the three pillars of the Strategic Plan 2025–2030, as well as the cross-cutting agenda of social development, youth, and gender.

A career diplomat with nearly 35 years of experience spanning bilateral, regional, and multilateral affairs, Lal has directed diplomatic missions across Asia, Africa, and Europe and led complex negotiations at the United Nations.

Unusually for a senior diplomat, he holds qualifications in both chemical engineering and biological sciences. As Deputy Secretary-General (Corporate), Baumann will oversee finance, human resources, operations, governance, and organizational strategy.

She brings more than 25 years of experience leading international organizations, most recently as Chief Operating Officer of the World Energy Council, where she managed global operations across a 90-country network. She has also held senior roles at Nominet and the International Chamber of Commerce UK.

In a statement, Baumann said the Commonwealth has “a distinctive role to play in helping countries work together” and expressed her commitment to delivering the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan in a way that “strengthens our relevance, and supports the organization to move at the pace required.”

Lal, for his part, said he looks forward to contributing to programs “ranging from governance, trade and investment, climate, sustainability, oceans and more.”

The appointments come as member countries prepare for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda later this year.
