# CICA Countries Share Knowledge to Reduce Food Losses at Beijing Workshop

**Beijing (TDI): **More than twenty officials, researchers, and policymakers from across Asia and beyond gathered in China this month for an intensive ten-day training workshop focused on reducing food loss and making agri-food supply chains resilient.

Held from June 1-10 and organized by the Academy of China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration (NAFRA), the workshop brought together government delegates from Egypt, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan under the framework of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

The event served as a practical implementation of CICA’s confidence-building measures in agriculture, one of the priority areas under its Economic Dimension.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, CICA Deputy Secretary General Farid Damirli stressed that food security goes well beyond national policy.

“Food security is not merely a national priority, but a cornerstone for building sustainable development, social stability, and regional prosperity,” he said.

He highlighted China’s consistent role as the coordinator for CICA’s agriculture dimension, noting that Beijing’s focus on experience-sharing and capacity building has meaningfully bolstered regional resilience.

The opening session also featured remarks from Tan Bengang, President of the Academy of NAFRA, and Zhang Yan, Deputy Director General of NAFRA’s Department of International Cooperation.

The curriculum took participants through the full arc of the food production lifecycle. Sessions covered food industry policy and standards development, advanced technologies for grain planting, harvesting and storage, and modern approaches to reducing losses in food processing.

Rather than confining learning to the classroom, the program included field visits to the National Engineering Research Center for Grain Storage and Transportation and the Grain and Oil Quality Inspection and Testing Center.

These visits gave delegates direct exposure to the technologies and systems that China has deployed to manage food stocks at scale.

Having diverse participants facilitated a genuine exchange of national experiences, with each delegation bringing distinct agricultural conditions and policy frameworks to the table.

Cultural activities woven into the program allowed participants to engage beyond the technical agenda, building the interpersonal ties that underpin long-term regional cooperation.

With food insecurity continuing to rise globally and extreme weather events threatening harvests across Asia, such capacity-building efforts have become operational necessities.
