# Chinese Representative met UN Under-Secretary-General

New York, 1 April 2022 (TDI): Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs, Liu Xiaoming, met UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary Dicarlo to discuss the situation of the Korean Peninsula. The meeting took place on March 29.

To clarify, the objective of the meeting was to deliberate on the affairs of the Korean Peninsula. In this context, Liu Xiaoming highlighted the principled stance of China over the situation of the Korean Peninsula.

As per remarks of the Chinese Representative, the current times are challenging for the regional and international communities. Thereupon, it requires negotiation and diplomacy to resolve the prevailing issues.

Further, the Chinese Representative mentioned that China values the role of the UN while addressing the issue of the Korean Peninsula. He also stated that China is ready to strengthen communication and collaboration between the two sides.

In response, UN Under-Secretary-General acknowledged the significant role of China to deal with the situation. In this regard, she looked forward to boosting cooperation between China and the UN.

##### DPRK’s Missile Launches and UN**

Recently, DPRK has launched a new kind of intercontinental ballistic missile on March 24. The missile is known as “[Hwasong-17](https://dppa.un.org/en/dicarlo-dprks-latest-icbm-launch-is-flagrant-breach-of-its-own-2018-moratorium)“.

It covered a range of 1090 km approximately. Besides, it fell into the Japan’s sea within its EEZ. In this matter, [Japan condemned](https://thediplomaticinsight.com/japans-response-to-north-korean-missile-tests/) the ICBM missile tests.

Along these lines, UN Under-Secretary-General noted that the UN also condemns the latest launch of the missiles. Similarly, this launch violates the DPRK moratorium of 2018. It violates the UNSC resolutions as well.

According to her, this launch has triggered tensions at regional and international levels. This year, DPRK conducted approximately twelve launches using the ICBM technology.

Eventually, DPRK has stated that these launches involve tests of hypersonic weapons, railway-borne missiles, ballistic missiles, and military satellites. Thereafter, UN Under-Secretary-General has called UNSC to act by resolution 2397.

As per UN Charter and Principles, DPRK must not launch tests that involve ICBM technology. Moreover, DPRK didn’t issue maritime and airspace precautionary notices during the tests.

Thereupon, ICAO has informed DPRK that these unannounced tests have posed risk to international civil aviation.
